Samuel Picken was born at Williamstown, Victoria, on 20 Apr 1873, the only son of James Picken and Mary Eliza McEachern (1849-1907). His parents were married on 4 Jan 1872 at the residence of his grandfather Captain Robert McEachern at Emerald Hill, Victoria. His paternal grandfather, Captain Samuel Picken, was also a mariner. Samuel would have been 17 years old when this photograph was taken for the Exhibition season ticket. He had relatives in Launceston: his aunt Ursula Collins and seven cousins are pictured in the Launceston Family Album. Samuel became a solicitor and married Amy Elizabeth Goodwin at Williamstown in 1907.
