Reginald Morris Ritchie was born in Launceston on 11 Aug 1866, the fifth of ten children of David Ritchie, JP of ‘Scone Mills’, Perth, and his wife Mary Amelia Anstice. He was a student at the Launceston Church Grammar School from 1878 to 1885. The main doors of the school Memorial Chapel were dedicated to his memory. He played for the Launceston Cricket Club and the North as well as a non first-class match for Tasmania.

Reginald moved to Latrobe and set up a legal practice there. He was a founder of the North West Law Association, a member of the Devon Hospital Board and the Latrobe Tourist Association. Boxing and bowling were also among his sporting interests. On 25 May 1911 Reginald married Eleanor Stewart at Latrobe. They had three sons: Reginald Stewart, born 3 Aug 1915; Rex and Keith. Reginald’s second name is spelled Maurice in some records. Reginald died aged 89 on 21 Nov 1955 at his residence ‘Benwerrin’, Latrobe. His ashes were interred in the rose garden at Carr Villa, B7 No. 30.
