Mary Teresa Darcey, or Tottie as she was known, was born about 1874, to Thomas and Catherine Darcey. Tottie was a dressmaker and sang in the Exhibition Choir in 1891-92. She made all the red and white costumes worn by the students of St Francis Xavier and the Presentation Convent schools who competed in a live chess tournament at the Tasmanian Exhibition in Mar 1892. She lived with her brothers Edward Darcey, who had a grocery shop in Paterson Street, and Richard Darcey.

Tottie married Arthur Babington on 2 Apr 1898 in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. Arthur, the son of Captain Babington, a harbourmaster of Hobart, was described as a famous bohemian who worked as a miner on the west coast of Tasmania. Their son, Arthur Bernard, was born in 1902 in Brunswick in Victoria and daughter, Patricia, in 1911 in Richmond, Victoria. The couple lived in Chillagoe, North Queensland, Melbourne and finally Sydney, where Arthur died on 11 Sep 1921. Mary Teresa Babington died in 1946 aged 82 at Katoomba, NSW.
