Louis Robert Sams was born in the Westbury district on 26 Aug 1863 to William George Gardiner Sams and his wife Sarah Rose Archer. Louis was a clerk in the Lands Department office, St John Street, Launceston. He was a good cricketer, touring New Zealand with the Tasmanian team in 1884. He was a prominent member of the Launceston Cricket Club from 1879 to 1899. His brother Richard H Sams also played for Launceston and Tasmania.

Louis married Isabel Louise Tuson at Christ Church, South Yarra, Victoria on 25 Mar 1891. Louise was the second daughter of George Tuson of Brisbane, Queensland. Louis and Isabel’s first three children were born in Launceston: Edna in Jan 1892; Vernon in 1894; and Cecil in 1899. Lorna was born in Queensland in 1910. The elder son Vernon was killed in action in France on 29 Jul 1916 while serving with the 25th Battalion, AIF.

Louis was a farmer at ‘Quamby’, Canning Downs, Warwick, Queensland, and retired to ‘Glencairn’, 100 Hamilton Road, Hamilton, Brisbane. Louis Sams died at Redcliffe, Brisbane, on 6 Jul 1941, aged 77.
