Leonard Arthur Hesketh, born in Bothwell, Tasmania, was the youngest of ten children of Rev. Wickham Mayer Hesketh (1811-1868) and Georgiana Averina Moore (1828-1879). Leonard was only five years old when his father died. His mother married Frederic Synnot on 25 Jun 1879 but she died only five days later, on 1 Jul 1879.

Leonard was appointed as a clerk at the Launceston Post Office in Apr 1884. He married Inez Berenice Griffith of Richmond, Victoria, on 13 Jan 1897 at St John’s Church, Melbourne. They returned to Launceston where their seven children were born: Gwendoline Estelle, 1899-1963; Arthur Wickham, 1902-1982; John Griffith, 1904-1988; Zillah Inez, 1906-1957; Leonard George Moore, 1907-1994; Keith, 1911-1997 and Reginald Charles, 1913-1914. Leonard died on 29 Oct 1930 aged 67 at Deviot and was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery in Section B3 No 109. Inez died on 2 Aug 1961 aged 89.
