Jane Gutteridge, known as Jinny, was born on 28 Dec 1867, the eighth of 14 children of James Gutteridge (1823-1892) and his second wife Emma Abbott (1837-1915). Jane was born at Breadalbane, Tasmania. Her parents and four eldest siblings had arrived in Melbourne on the Princess Royal in Jan 1863. James first came to Tasmania in 1843 with the 96th Manchester Regiment of Foot.

Jane married Charles William Bryan, a farmer, at St Andrew’s Church, Lymington North, on 26 Dec 1892. They had two children. Gladys Mary was born on 1 Nov 1893, but died as a child in 1906. Harry Royce was born on 30 Aug 1898 and died on 11 Dec 1975. They lived on the property ‘Leighton’ at Evandale. Later, they moved to Mowbray Heights where Jane died aged 78 on 11 Mar 1946.
