James Reid Ure, the youngest of six children, was born on 11 Feb 1868 at Green Ponds (Kempton) to Robert Ure (1828-1887) and his wife Sarah Reid (1837-1912). Robert was the Town Inspector in Launceston when he died. James was an accountant with The Examiner newspaper and lived with his mother and unmarried sisters Sarah and Jane at 61 Margaret Street and later 10 Stone Street. He died on 26 Dec 1948 aged 80, in Holbrook Street, Invermay. James was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery section F1 No 127.
