Gertrude Russen was born in Launceston on 19 Feb 1880, a daughter of Charles Russen, a baker, and his wife Mary Barnard Long. Gertrude married Arthur Robert Wright on 10 Nov 1903 at the Methodist Parsonage, Brunswick, Victoria. Their children were: Jean Gertrude, born 1 Dec 1904; Annie Mary, 21 Dec 1907; Ethelwyn Sarah (Wyn), 11 Apr 1909; Irene Margaret, 21 Jul 1916 and a boy, birthdate unknown.
