Ernest Milton Law was born in Launceston, Tasmania, on 21 Sep 1870, the youngest son of Rev. William Law (1827-1907) and his wife Sarah Hawley (1826-1899). He was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School, Melbourne University and the University of Tasmania. He was called to the bar in 1892 and had as his partner William Dubrelle Weston. Ernest married Florence Ethel, daughter of Alderman JW Pepper, on 11 Mar 1896 in Launceston. He was involved in many charitable, sporting and community organisations. The family had a holiday home and orchard at Swan Point, which he was subdividing into smaller portions when he died sudenly on 17 Aug 1909 aged 38 years from typhoid fever, leaving his wife Ethel with six young children: Jean Ethel, Alice Hawley, Meysie Reeve, William Bruce, Rhoda Florence and Freda Madge.
