Charles Leslie Steer was born in Launceston on 11 Mar 1874, the fifth child of James Steer (1841-1911) and his wife Elizabeth Fanny Gould (1845-1907). When he was 22 Charles married 35-year-old Kathleena Flaherty on 5 Oct 1896. Their daughter Gladys Irene was born the following month. In 1903 Charles was a clerk and living at his parents’ home at 20 Hill Street, West Launceston. See The Examiner 22 Apr 2006, p.30.
