Charles Edward Hamilton Ferguson was born in Launceston on 3 Oct 1877, the only son of John Charles Ferguson (1842-1914) and his wife Beatrice Hamilton (1846-1919). Educated in Launceston, he did not enter his father’s ironmongery business but joined the accounting firm of Inglis and Inglis. He later became a partner in the firm of chartered accountants, Wise, Lord and Ferguson.

Charles served in World War I in the 40th Battalion 1st AIF and was awarded the Military Cross. In 1949 he was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George for his contribution to the development of hydro-electric development.

Charles married Winnefride Hughes at the Church of England, Toorak, Victoria on 16 Dec 1919. Their only son, Angus, was drowned by a tidal wave while serving with a Scottish regiment in India during World War II.

Charles’ will stated that one hundred pounds was to be provided to pay for the erection of a bronze plaque at the headquarters of the Black Watch at Perth, Scotland. They also had a daughter Beatrice Cecilia Hamilton who married Stewart Cockburn, a journalist. The Fergusons lived at ‘Sun Bank’, 18 Nutgrove Avenue, Sandy Bay. Winefrid died on 10 Jan 1953 and Charles died aged 80 on 8 Mar 1958. See The Examiner 6 Jan 2007, page 26.
