Alfred Green was born in Launceston on 18 Apr 1838, the second son of Richard Green (1808-1878) from Hertfordshire, and Hannah Jackson (1810-1904) from Yorkshire. Richard and Hannah arrived in Tasmania on the Eliza in May 1831 and married four years later. They accompanied Dr Mathias Gaunt (Hannah’s uncle) and his wife Frances (Richard’s sister) and the Gaunts’ English-born children.

Alfred was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School and trained as a lawyer, eventually becoming a partner in the Launceston firm of solicitors Ritchie & Parker, Alfred Green & Co. He was the solicitor to the Launceston Marine Board, the Launceston Corporation, the Equitable Building Society, and at the time of his death was president of the Northern Law Society. Alfred was connected to the Holy Trinity Sunday School for a period of 70 years as a scholar, teacher and secretary. He was also connected to St John’s Church and was warden for many years. There are two memorials to him at St John’s. He held various offices with the Horticultural Society, Yacht Club and Regatta Association.

Alfred married Rose Barnard on 30 Nov 1870 in Launceston when they were both aged 32. They had one son, Alfred Lawrence (Laurie) Green, born on 7 Oct 1875, also pictured in the Family Album. Alfred senior died on 5 Sep 1912 aged 74 and Rose died on 27 Apr 1930. See The Examiner 29 Apr 2006, p. 30.
