Notes:

Abraham George Chalk, known as George, was born about 1858 in Hambledon, near Southampton, England. His parents were Abraham, an agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth Chalk of Green Lane, Hambledon. He came to Tasmania in 1886 and was a traveller for Miller and Company, soap manufacturers, Hobart. He was an accountant when he married Annie Miller on 24 Dec 1890. They lived in Launceston during the time of the Tasmanian Exhibition before moving to Burnie in 1896.

George was a prominent agriculturist in the Burnie district for over 30 years. Active in civic and local affairs, he was on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Co-operative and a member of the Burnie Road Trust and later, from 1907, a councillor with the Burnie Municipal Council. George and Annie’s five children were born between 1893 and 1908. They were staunch members of the Methodist Church. George died on 2 Mar 1934 and was buried at the Wivenhoe Cemetery. More information can be found in the book Pioneers of Burnie by Richard Pike.
